Wow. This is big. Hackers were able to outwit the computer security of annualcreditreport.com, the website jointly operated by Equifax, Experian and Trans Union for the purpose of providing the congressionally mandated free annual credit reports to consumers. The hackers potentially gained access to over 200 million American consumers' credit reports.
The criminals were apparently at least partially politically motivated, since they targeted notable Democrats first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton and democrat supporters Jay Z and Beyonce. Hacked credit information about each was posted on a website. The FBI is investigating.
Equifax was the first to confirm that information was hacked through annualcreditreport.com. Experian and Trans Union both confirmed.
Equifax, Trans Union and Experian are claiming that they are investigating. But the credit bureaus' definition of an investigation is just to ask the hackers if they broke any laws, much like their so-called investigations of errors disputed by consumers. If the hackers deny breaking any laws, Equifax, Trans Union and Experian will absolve them of the crimes, no matter the amount of evidence of criminal behavior committed by the hackers.
In fact, the credit bureaus do not just take the word of the hackers, they expect the hackers to investigate themselves.
Fortunately, Experian claims the situation is isolated, since only 200 million consumers are potentially affected by the hackers' brazen use of the Social Security numbers of their victims. Allegedly, the hackers were able to bypass the security measures of annualcreditreport.com because they knew so much about their victims, like that their Social Security numbers used the digits one through nine, and they were born during the 1900s. The ability of the hackers to guess both 2 out of 9 numbers of the victims' Social Security numbers and that they were born during the last century is enough for the matching logic of Experian, Equifax and Trans Union to think the information provided matched the information of the victims.
Beyonce, Jay Z, madame first lady, Mr. Vice President, Ms. Clinton and Mr. Holder, if any of you need representation against the credit bureaus for the theft of your identities that may happen, please feel free to contact me. It would be my pleasure to sue the credit bureaus for you, as I have done for so many of their victims in the past.
